The National Aviary is America's only independent indoor nonprofit aviary. It is also America's largest aviary, and the only accorded honorary "National" status by the United States Congress.

The gardens were founded in 1893 by steel and real-estate magnate Henry Phipps as a gift to the City of Pittsburgh. It contains formal gardens and various species of exotic plants.

Pittsburgh International is the second busiest passenger airport in Pennsylvania and 42nd busiest in the United States in passenger travel. In land area, it occupies more than 12,900 acres (45 kmē), making it the fourth largest airport in the nation.
