Located on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is recognized as the tallest lighthouse in America. It is still in operation. The light at the top is automated and is visible every seven seconds.

Landmark Trivia

  • Due to erosion of the shore, the lighthouse was moved from its original location at the edge of the ocean to safer ground 2,870 feet (870 m) inland in 1999.
  • One must climb 268 steps to reach the light.
  • The height of the structure is about 207.5 feet (63.2 m) from the bottom of the foundation footer to the top of the spire on the roof.
