This sculpture originally stood at an intersection in Paris but was removed when a subway was constructed. It was placed here by the Fairmount Park Art Association as part of a movement to beautify the park with sculpture and landscaping.

Landmark Trivia

  • The Statue of Joan was cast by Emmanuel Fremiet in 1874. The sculpture depicts the French heroine riding into the battle of Orleans in 1429.
  • When the Art Association purchased the statue in 1890, it placed Joan on the East side of the Girard Avenue Bridge. It was moved to its present site in 1948.
