The house served as a Presidential Retreat during the Eisenhower administration and was also home to the Eisenhowers after they left the White House in 1961.

The Eisenhowers ran the estate as a working cattle farm. It had a show herd of black Angus cattle.

Some of the more famous guests at the house included Nikita Khrushchev, Charles de Gaulle, Winston Churchill, and Ronald Reagan.

Representing the states, 50 Norway Spruce trees line the main driveway. Most were given to Eisenhower as birthday presents from the Republican Party chairman of each state in 1955.
