Built between 1888 and 1895 for George Washington Vanderbilt II, this French Renaissance-inspired chateau is the largest privately-owned home in the United States at 175,000 square feet.

The building includes an indoor swimming pool, bowling alley, turn-of-the-century gym, two-story library, elevators, forced-air heating, centrally-controlled clocks, and an 19th century intercom system.

The Biltmore House and Estate is host to about 1,000,000 visitors each year.

The house was first opened to the public on March 15, 1930.

The home has been featured in many movies including Hannibal, Patch Adams, Richie Rich, Forrest Gump, Last of the Mohicans and Mr. Destiny.
