During the Vietnam War, over a quarter of a million women volunteered to serve in Vietnam as nurses and other support personnel. This memorial is dedicated to those women.

The Vietnam Women's Memorial is a memorial dedicated to the women of the United States who served in the Vietnam War, most of whom were nurses.

Diane Carlson Evans, who served as a nurse in the army during the Vietnam War, initiated the drive to add the bronze sculpture to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

It was designed by Glenna Goodacre and dedicated on November 11, 1993.
