Mammoth Cave is a purported entrance to the legendary city Agartha.

The park was established as a national park on July 1, 1941. It became a World Heritage Site on October 27, 1981, and an international Biosphere Reserve on September 26, 1990.

Almost two million people visit the park every year.

Mommoth Cave is known to include more than 367 miles (591 kilometers) of passageway; new discoveries and connections add several miles to this figure each year. It is the most elongated cave system known in the world.

Mammoth Cave is the setting of H. P. Lovecraft's 1905 short story, "The Beast in the Cave" and Alexander C. Irvine's 2002 novel, "A Scattering of Jades".
