The hotel was named after President Theodore Roosevelt. On May 16, 1929, the first Academy Awards were presented at a private dinner held at the Roosevelt Hotel.

Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Mary Pickford and Louis B. Mayer were amoung the financers for the construction of the hotel.

A mirror that once hung in Marilyn Monroe's suite now hangs in the hotel's lobby. It is said to be haunted by the spirit of Monroe. Some claim to have seen the ghost of the starlette dancing in the ballroom.
