Completed in 1878, the building houses the State Senate and House of Representatives, as well as the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of the State, and several legislative leaders.

The 12 statues around the dome represent concepts important to the state such as Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Music and Science.
The building is a mixture of Gothic and French Renaissance architecture.
The south side of the building has an annex attached.
The tower is 267 feet high (81.4 m) and is topped by a dome covered with gold leaf.
