Completed in 1851, the building was called the Capitol of the Confederacy and it was the site where Jefferson Davis was sworn in as the President of the Confederacy on February 18, 1861.

The Alabama State Legislature moved out of the building in 1985 so the building could be renovated. The renovations were completed in the early 1990's, but the Legislature never returned to the Capitol.

A commemorative marker in the shape of a star is set on the top step of the portico where Jefferson Davis stood on February 18th, 1861 to take his oath of office as President of the Confederate States of America.

The Capitol is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
