After the Ohio country was surveyed, it could be sold or given away as land grants; the settlers brought their deeds to be registered at the Land Office. The building has some of its original logs.

Fort Steuben was built in 1786 for the protection of surveyors who were mapping the Northwest Territory. The reconstructed fort is open to the public and helps to depict the daily life of those who helped open up the new territories to settlement.
